Good morning!
Last week OpenAI bought a personal finance startup and folded the team into ChatGPT. Their stated goal is AI-powered financial guidance at scale. Credit unions have always owned that conversation with their members.
This week is about making sure it stays that way.
TRENDING AI NEWS FOR CU
OpenAI bought a personal finance team and shut the product down immediately
On April 14, OpenAI acquired Hiro Finance, a personal financial planning app backed by Ribbit Capital. The product closed on April 20. The whole team moved inside ChatGPT. This is OpenAI's second personal finance acquisition in twelve months. A Javelin analyst covering the deal said the real question now is which industry owns financial advice and member engagement going forward.
Why it matters: for your CU: Members are already forming financial guidance habits on general AI platforms. The credit unions building that experience inside their own digital product are the ones keeping that relationship.
WOCCU published the first AI ethics framework built for credit unions
The World Council of Credit Unions released a 60-page whitepaper this week, anchored in OECD AI Principles and written for the cooperative model. Three-phase rollout plan, a model Ethical AI Committee charter, five real CU scenarios.
Why it matters for your CU: When your board asks how your CU governs AI, this is the document that answers it.
NCUA just changed lending compensation rules
NCUA's sixth deregulation round revises 12 CFR 701.21(c)(8) to allow CU employees, including senior management, to tie bonuses to lending performance as part of overall financial results. The blanket prohibition that caused years of ambiguity gets replaced with clear, flexible standards.
Why it matters for your CU: If your lending team can now be compensated on volume, the next question is whether your processes can handle it. Deregulation creates runway. AI is what fills it.
DEEP DIVE
The member financial guidance conversation is up for grabs. Some credit unions are already moving.
BECU, the fifth-largest credit union in the country, acquired a fintech AI advisor team last year, brought them in-house, and started building a product called Becca. An AI financial counselor built on real member data. The thinking was straightforward. Most members cannot access one-on-one financial advice because it is expensive to deliver at scale. Credit unions have always been the institution closest to closing that gap. AI makes it possible to actually do it.
A TD Bank survey published this month found 55% of Americans asked an AI model for financial advice in the past year. A year ago, that number was 10%. Five-fold increase in twelve months.
Credit unions hold something no general platform has. Transaction history, loan data, savings patterns, and years of relationship. ChatGPT gives generic answers because it knows nothing specific about the person asking. Your CU knows everything. The institutions building that advantage into a real member-facing experience will keep the guidance conversation. The ones waiting will find members have already built habits somewhere else.
Three things to do this week:
Ask your digital banking vendor what AI-assisted financial guidance is live today, not coming soon.
Look at which members log in once a month and do nothing else. That is where the relationship is weakest.
Take this to your board as a member retention conversation, not a technology one.
